What does a tax preparer do?
A tax preparer prepares income tax returns for other people, and when paid for that work is a paid preparer. You talk with the client about what happened in their year, gather the information slips, receipts, and last year's return, and enter them into tax software, which does the arithmetic. Then you check the result against the documents and the interview, explain it, sign as the paid preparer, e-file, and stay available for whatever comes next.
-
What will I learn in the Tax Preparer Certificate Course?
You learn the job by following one client from the first inquiry to the letter that may arrive months later. That covers the structure of a return, from income and adjustments through deductions, credits, and payments to a refund or balance due, plus document checklists and organizers, the interview questions slips cannot answer, reconciling to the slips, your own review pass, signature authorization and the acknowledgment, registrations, pricing, engagement letters, and running a practice.
-
How long does the Tax Preparer Certificate Course take to complete?
The Tax Preparer Certificate Course is designed to be self-paced, with a recommended completion time of 6 weeks. However, you have the flexibility to complete it in as little as 2 weeks or extend it up to 12 weeks, depending on your schedule. Need more time? No problem. All of IAP’s Courses include lifetime access.
-
How much can I earn as a tax preparer?
Earnings depend on your fee, how many returns you complete, and whether you work for a tax office or your own practice. The Chapter 5 sample estimates about three and a quarter hours behind one simple return, and roughly 46 such returns in a 200 hour season once marketing, bookkeeping, and inquiries that never book take their share. Price from your own hours and expenses, then track inquiries, returns completed, and hours per return.
-
Can I start my own tax preparation business after completing this course?
Yes. The course prepares you to join the independent preparers who work for themselves, from a home office, a rented room, or a remote practice. Chapter 5 walks through choosing a business structure, checking and registering a name, opening a separate business account, simple bookkeeping, setting aside your own tax, the preparer and e-file registrations and their lead times, pricing, engagement letters, insurance, and asking for reviews and referrals.
-
Do I need any prior experience or education to enroll in this course?
No. This course is designed for beginners. You do not need accounting experience, a tax office, or a business degree, and preparing returns for pay is regulated differently from place to place in the United States and Canada. What you do need is a willingness to ask the second question, keep a schedule, and check every figure against the document behind it. Everything else is taught step by step.
-
Can I take the Tax Preparer Certificate Course from outside of North America?
