What does a dog trainer do?
A dog trainer teaches dogs new behaviors and teaches their owners how to keep those behaviors going once the trainer has left. A session usually runs an hour or less, at the client's home, at a training space, or in a park, and most of it belongs to the owner holding the leash. A trainer does not diagnose illness, prescribe medication, groom, or walk dogs. Medical questions go to the veterinarian, and serious aggression or fear that does not ease goes to a veterinary behaviorist.
-
What will I learn in the Dog Trainer Certificate Course?
You learn how dogs learn, including classical and operant learning, the four combinations of reinforcement and punishment, and why reward-based training is the working standard. You practice marker timing, reward delivery, loose leash handling, luring, capturing and shaping, and reading stress signals such as lip licking, whale eye and stillness. You also learn owner coaching, how to take an intake and write a training plan, how to outline a six-week basic manners class, and how to set up the business side.
-
How long does the Dog Trainer Certificate Course take to complete?
The Dog Trainer Certificate Course is designed to be self-paced, with a recommended completion time of 6 weeks. However, you have the flexibility to complete it in as little as 2 weeks or extend it up to 12 weeks, depending on your schedule. Need more time? No problem. All of IAP’s Courses include lifetime access.
-
How much can I earn as a dog trainer?
The course does not quote an income figure, because a published pet-ownership or pet-spending number says nothing about your own client list. Instead you price each service by its elements, meaning the session, the travel, the preparation, the notes and the follow-up. You work a one-week money example, count the unpaid hours between sessions, and track inquiries, sessions per week, revenue and costs so you can see what a week actually leaves you.
-
Can I start my own dog training business after completing this course?
Yes. Chapter 5 turns the craft into a business. You write a one-page plan stating your services by their elements, your delivery mix and your target client. It covers operating as a sole proprietor or forming a company, checking and registering a business name, when keeping client dogs on your premises raises boarding or zoning questions, general liability and care, custody and control insurance, service agreements and waivers, pricing, and the referral sources that bring clients.
-
Do I need any prior experience or education to enroll in this course?
No. This course is designed for beginners. You do not need shelter experience, a training facility, or a business degree, and dog training is not a licensed occupation in most places in the United States or Canada. What you do need is a willingness to coach frustrated owners, keep a schedule, and stay steady around fearful dogs. Everything else is taught step by step.
-
Can I take the Dog Trainer Certificate Course from outside of North America?
Yes. The course is 100% online and self-paced, which means you can enroll and complete it from anywhere in the world. All course materials are accessible 24/7 on your schedule.
-
Will I receive a certificate when I finish the course?
Yes! Upon completing the course, you will receive a Dog Trainer Certificate from IAP Career College. This certificate will demonstrate your proficiency in dog training and help you stand out as you pursue your career in this field.
